Form 1040

Form 1040 is the standard US federal income tax return. US citizens and green card holders file it on their worldwide income every year, wherever they live — including Americans resident in the UK, who file it in addition to any UK return.

US Individual Income Tax Return

In more detail

Form 1040 is the core annual return for US individuals. Because the US taxes citizens and green card holders on worldwide income regardless of residence, an American in the UK files Form 1040 reporting UK and US income alike, then uses reliefs — the Foreign Tax Credit (Form 1116) or the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (Form 2555) — to prevent double taxation. Supporting schedules attach as needed: Schedule B for foreign accounts and interest, Schedule C for self-employment, Schedule D for capital gains, Schedule E for rental income. Filing Form 1040 does not usually mean paying US tax twice, but the return must still be filed even when reliefs reduce the US bill to zero.
