Estimated Tax
US estimated taxes are quarterly payments toward tax not collected through withholding — often relevant to self-employed Americans abroad and those with investment or foreign income, who can otherwise face underpayment penalties.
Quarterly US Tax Payments (Form 1040-ES)
In more detail
The US system expects tax to be paid across the year, either through withholding or quarterly estimated payments on Form 1040-ES. Americans abroad frequently owe estimates because UK employment has no US withholding, and because self-employment, rental, or investment income is not withheld at source. Underpaying during the year can trigger a penalty even if the return is later paid in full. Safe-harbour rules protect against the penalty, and foreign tax credits can reduce what actually needs paying.
